Default Profiles and porsches

I have a specific colour that I cannot reproduce using the profile editor: porsche guard red, which has tantilizing tints of orange and bright red. I am not sure if the fault is with my camera (D2X), the profile editor, the user (me) or the gamut of my monitors, which are colour calibrated. BTW, I cannot get the colour right using NX or Bibble either, which makes me think the problem might be the monitor gamut.

Anyway, I'm sure there are lots of guard red porsches in California. If a loyal adobe engineer just happened upon one and snapped a photo, I would love to see if they can reproduce this colour.

Equipment used:
D2X, grey card, WB corrected
LR, CS3, Profile editor
Dell 24/30" LCD monitors

Cheers
Rory

Rory, it is most likely a monitor gamut issue. You can test this out by playing around in Photoshop and trying to create that color on your display just using the color palette and paint tools. If you cannot, then it's likely OOG on your display. It does not necessarily mean that your camera can't handle it, though.

Thanks Eric. I get the same results in photoshop. I transition from orange-red to magenta-red without being able to hit the sweet spot.

Gamut issue ...

You can turn on the soft proof & gamut warning in PS to show you exactly where the limits are (check the View menu)

I forgot about proofing. Yes, this highlighted the problem. Hmmm, I see a new monitor in my future...

Eric - thanks for all the great work on the profile editor. Very much appreciated!
