That's probably because your graphics card or its driver doesn't support hardware rendering. You may be able to get an updated driver that implements this feature or it may be that an earlier driver does the trick.
I had to find an earlier driver for my laptop to get Bridge to use hardware rendering. I used a modified ATI version by Omega - you can see if one's available for your Dell here: <http://www.omegadrivers.net/>
You may have to try several to find one that allows the Bridge check box to remain ticked. When you do you should find slideshow and preview run a lot smoother.
