In CS3, save as collection merely saves the search, which is then re-run from scratch if you re-access it.

Hope CS4 is better.

Thanks, Robert. The new Collections in CS4 sound exactly what I was hoping for.

Yes, I think you'll like Smart Collections in Bridge CS4--they allow you to save searches as collections. Thanks, Anita. I ordered CS4 today and am advised that shipping to UK starts on 15 October. Can't wait. This feature alone will save me lots of time - not to mention all the other improvements across the suite.

Faster performance is at the top of the list.

This is funny because in real life, Bridge CS4 is slower than Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9. The same is true for Photoshop CS4 vs Photoshop CS3. So everybody who was waiting for CS4 to cure any CS3 issues is in for a major surprise (and I mean not a pleasant one).

Re, CS4 being slower than CS3:

What???

Is Adobe following Microsoft's Vista strategy? Putting out bloated sluggish code to get people to send them $$$ for a "needed" upgrade? Maybe it's time to say No! to Adobe's CSx upgrades just like millions of Windows users have done with Vista.

I can assure anyone reading this that both Photoshop and Bridge CS4 are lightning fast on my computer and both are a generation further in usability and features.

Only the people with problems complain so I thought I'd redress the balance.

I found the CS4 version better than CS3 which kept crashing on folders with over a 500 images. I went back to v2. I like the CS4 version, way better/faster.

John and Bart, would you mind detailing what kind of systems you have? Thanks. --EdB

That's what I am wondering, too. I am on Windows XP Pro SP2 (32 bit), AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 6000+ (3 GHz), 4 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card with 512 MB video RAM, one 24" LCD monitor (1,920 × 1,200 pixels), and hundreds of free gigabytes on two Samsung F1 Spinpoint hard disks. Since version 2.1.1, Bridge CS3 was fast and reliable on my machine. So was Photoshop CS3 10.0.1. And I do have folders with 1,000+ image files.

Now CS4 is sluggish, and there is functionality missing in Bridge. To set thumbnail quality to 'low' in order to speed up cache building, I had to tweak the Registry manually (took some time to figure out how); no way to set things up properly in the Bridge CS4 Preferences dialog.
