Default Aligning a div to top

I'm working through my first all css website. I got the masthead ad nav to line
up fine. Then I have another div which is the left nav/info bar. For some
reason its about 20px below the div above it. If I do a negative margin top I
can get it to line up. Some people have said using negative margins is not a
good idea. I tried valign: top; no luck. I even put a margin-bottom: 0px on the
div I want it to line up with above it and that didn't help.
