Put a default image there and make that your 'button' (not sure which version of GL you have).

Then make actions for the thumbnails - each time one is clicked (or rolled over, up to you) that default image will change to the one chosen.

Don't make any mouse-exit actions, then each one will stay till something else is chosen.
