I have lots of pictures for which I added Metadata "Description". I now realize that I should have used the "Title" field. Is there an "automatic" way to move all "Descriptions" in a folder and all subfolders to the "Title" field? I use Bridge CS3.

Either do it folder by folder or run a search that covers all affected files, then use the metadata panel to cut the text from one field and paste it into another field for all selected files at once.

Thanks but will not help in my case. I have appr. 100 affected folders with 1000 files. There are different Description in all files that need to be moved.
Unless I find some script or other automatic way, I have to do this manually for each file. This will not happen. Of course I could write my lengthier decriptions in the Title field, there seem to a lot of space, reversingthe fields. But in the end this will be confusing. The reason I got into this is that in Bridge CS2, Title was not a field I could chose for display under the "thimbnail" pictures, only Description. I put the species name of animals pictured there. I now want to add short stories to some pictures. |

I might be able to help Jon, but I am going away for a week.
On my site there is a script "CSV Data Collector" you could use this to back up the Title and Description text from each folder into it's own csv file. This file could then be used to re-input the data to the correct fields. When you run the script select a folder where the new CSV file is to be placed, enter the CSV file name including the extention. Select full filepath, title and description this will get the data from all visible thumnails. I will then write/modify one of my input scripts for these fields. The CSV Data Collector can be download from the Bridge Scripts section. <http://www.aoow34> Dot dsl Dot pipex.com/ This script will be the one that I or yourself can modify. <http://www.ps-scripts.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=2319> |

Many thanks. Sounds very promising but did not work. I come as far as to being prompted for a csv-file with the "Startup script" folder open. When I enter a name (I used TDSwap) the script run on but displayed an ErrorLog.txt file: "These documents have not been updated" Seems the .csv file was never created. I also tried to put it in another folder.
Could it be a problem I use the Swedish version where Title and Description are called something else? |

That is just a header for the error log.
If no files were listed it should have worked? Have you checked? Did you you the input file thats was created by "CSV Data Collector"? Can you check that it has the details in that need changing. If the CSV file is empty it might need the file encoding changing to UTF-8. |

A. Ooops. I found out I could change language to "English" (from Swedish) in may installation. It then appeared that one of the involved fields is called "Headline", not "Title" (as I had guessed incorrectly). The other is correctly "Description". I tried to edit the script file and renamed it. The new script "run" but the behaviour was the same. However, I was not altogether sure about what texts to change, "title" seems to be used in other context too in the file. If you think this (incorrect name of field) is a problem, and it should be, I suppose it is quicker for you to edit your version and attach it in an email to me (jon@rana.se)(rather than checking my edits). Or edit the posted version. Strangely, neither of the two versions crashed altogether (despite that they referred to non existing entities in the metadata). If you do not think this is the problem, go on read the rest (that I wrote before I discovered this problem).
B. I am afraid I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to PS scripts and the like. It seems I successfully downloaded the script in the right place as it indeed appears at the bottom of the right click menu "Title Description Swap". When I "run" the script I get a "Please select a CSV file" window. It defaults to the Bridge "Startup scripts" but the folder window (the big one) is blank. So is the small "File name" window. The File type window contains "CSV-file (*.csv)" I now type "DTSwap.csv" in the empty file name window and hit enter. This gives the ErrorLog.txt Window. I think I understand that the fact no files are listed (only the header text) is a good sign. However, no swaps seem to take place. I have tested with one or two files (.tif pictures) marked in Bridge. I have tested both with Headline originally empty (as for me is typically the case) or entries in both Description and Headline. No swap. My metadata (Description) are seen in the IPTC-kernel (I hope I translated correctly from Swedish) part of the Metadata window. I do not know what "CSV Data collector" is but assume it is some routine called by the script. I do not know where the input file might be found so I do not know if it was created. The only thing found in the Startup Script folder is a .jsx file which I suppose is the script. Is it the TDSwap.csv file I tried to create? It is not seen in the directory (but appears as a choice if I hit the "pull down menu" in the small File name window). I do not know about file encoding. Where do I set/change that? Sorry to trouble you. I hope you do not give up on me yet. |
