Every so often, when we open a Word manuscript into InCopy (leaving out the Word formatting), we find that at a certain point IN LAYOUT MODE ONLY the text starts to appear as double-spaced. If you toggle to STORY mode, there is nothing to indicate any typesetting command to change the line-spacing. Again, this problem does not occur every time a Word document is imported. What could be causing this double-spacing?

There's no such thing as double spacing with page layout. Leading
controls the spacing within a paragraph and paragraph spacing controls the spacing between paragraphs. Select the text and check the character and paragraph panels to see what the settings are. Bob |

Hi, Bob.
Sorry for the old-school term ("double-spacing"). I was just trying to describe how it appears on screen. Next time the problem occurs, I will indeed check the leading -- although I still don't understand what could be responsible for a sudden, seeming arbitrary change in leading affecting only parts of a text document imported from Word. Thanks for responding. Dave H |

Hey, Bob.
A co-worker just came to me with that line-spacing problem in a document he had imported to InCopy from Word. I followed your advice and found that the leading in the affected section was indeed different than what the paragraph style called for (in this case, the leading was 12.4 rather than 12.0). I corrected the leading and everything readjusted perfectly. Thanks again. |
