My utilities folder, including such stuff as Keychain Access, System Profiler, Bluetooth, Netinfo Manager etc. was wiped out by Adobe's utility folder which is also called "utilities." Bad bad bad. I always back up everything in case a new installation goes bad so I was able to recover everything. I'm curious as to which other installation problems people have run into.
Thanks. |

Eve I'm sure you have had misfortunes but to blame them on Adobe is misguded. If there was a issue with the installer then thousands of people here complaining about this.
I would think that you have a maintenance issue and something you did before or during the installation is what caused the problem. |

The folder called "Adobe Utilities" was created inside my Applications/Utilities folder and nothing else in that folder was damaged or destroyed.
My guess is that at sometime you may have moved things from their default locations or changed the names of your folders? I also suspect that all of your "lost" items are still hidden on your HD somewhere. Run a Search for a known, but missing, item. If that doesn't work, run DiskWarrior. |

Well that is not true what ever happened I do not know but it is called Adobe Utilities not Utilities and did not overwrite your Utilities folder.
If yu have 10.5.5 then Net Info is not Directory Utility. I have a complete folder left on my Mac Pro. |

I'm running 10.4.11
As I said before I backed up my entire system as I usually do before installaling anything at all so I was able to retrieve the missing utilities. Right after finishing my upgrade from CS1 I tried pressing on the "more info" button on the "about this mac" pulldown but it was greyed out. I also tried launching keychain and that didn't work either. I clicked on the dock icon & pressed "show in finder" but there was no response. I then went directly to the "Utilities" folder and nothing but the adobe utilities were in that folder. I didn't touch or move anything after installing CS4. I'm puzzled as to why my adobe utilities folder was installed as "utilities" so I'll hazard a guess. When I originally bought CS I had moved my CS applications (from which I upgraded) into a CS folder I had created instead of leaving them in the root applications folder where they had originally been installed. Furthermore prior to my purchase and installation of CS4 I had been running Photoshop CS3 trial and application and components were also moved into a CS3 folder which I had created. I did use the CS3 uninstaller before my installation of CS4. Perhaps my moving CS1 and the trial CS3 into a different folder caused this to happen. Well I certainly won''t be moving around any Adobe applications any more. |

Greeble,
When I bought CS (the very 1st version) I had moved my CS applications into a CS folder I had created, instead of leaving them in the root applications folder where they had originally been installed. That could well be the problem. In general with OS X apps, do NOT move or rename apps folders or apps components, or rename them. If you must have a folder somewhere neatly organized to your taste, create a folder of aliases. Neil |

Thanks, Neil. I did in fact run Disk Utility before installation. My permissions were fine. Here's what I usually do before installing new software - back up EVERYTHING (might be overkill but I'm ocd when it comes to my computer), including applications, both libraries, documents etc etc. Then I run Disk Utility after which I install the software. Then I run Disk Utility again only last night I did not because of my installation snafu.
I didn't have an uninstaller for CS1 so I deleted the components manually according to an Adobe tech note which described in detail what files needed to be removed in addition to the applications. Maybe I missed a file, who knows. The main thing is that I've learned my lesson. The folder with aliases is a great idea btw. As always, I appreciate your feedback ![]() |
